UK health authorities are investigating ongoing outbreaks of Salmonella Enteritidis, with the latest evidence indicating potential links to eggs imported into the UK.
The latest update from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), published on 27 August 2026, confirms that 259 cases and one associated death have been identified in England in the main Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak cluster.
Two additional, genetically distinct clusters are also being investigated, as health authorities examine whether they too could be associated with imported eggs.
The investigation remains ongoing. Importantly, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has stated that there is currently no evidence that UK-produced eggs are affected, and UKHSA says the overall risk to the general public from Salmonella remains low.

What Is Happening?
UKHSA, the Food Standards Agency and other public-health partners are investigating outbreaks of Salmonella Enteritidis.
The main cluster, known as t5.9411, has reached 259 confirmed cases in England as of 25 August 2026.
Cases have been identified across all nine regions of England, and UKHSA reports that the people affected range from 0 to 90 years old.
Of the 149 cases in this cluster for which information was available, 41 people had been admitted to hospital, and one death has been associated with the outbreak cluster.
UKHSA has also identified increases in two further genetically distinct Salmonella Enteritidis clusters:
- t0.24068 – 177 confirmed cases
- t5.9765 – 38 confirmed cases
The genetic relationships between the clusters, together with epidemiological and food-exposure information gathered so far, suggest that the outbreaks could be associated with imported eggs.
Investigations remain ongoing and the exact causes have not yet been established.

Why Are Eggs Being Investigated?
Evidence gathered during the investigation has identified links between cases and eating food prepared outside the home, including food from small cafés, restaurants and takeaway businesses.
Earlier investigation data showed that egg consumption was the strongest food signal identified, while food-chain investigations found that affected premises had received eggs from multiple sources, including egg importers.
The latest UKHSA update states that investigations indicate a link to imported eggs, but authorities are continuing to investigate the outbreaks and other potential common sources.

The FSA considers eggs produced under the British Lion Code and Laid in Britain assurance scheme to present a very low risk of Salmonella.
